Diseases and Disorders

Hello Students!!!
We have been learning alot about diesases and disorders, I stumbled along this article that I would like you to read. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/19/health/19brody.html?_r=1 After you read this article I would like you to answer the following questions:

1.      How large a role do genes appear to play in longevity?
  1. What are the “three R’s” in this context?
  2. What are some of the lifestyle traits common to many centenarians, according to the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University?
  3. What are some of the main findings of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s study of optimists and pessimists?
  4. Why do you think “survivors of traumatic life events” are more likely than other people to live to be 100?
  5. What are some of the most common disease that older people tend to get?
  6. What are 3 ways you as a student can do to help prevent health diseases and disorders?
Please answer these questions in a word document and attach it to here.

For Extra Credit!!!!:  You can calculate your living to 100 expectancy at this website: http://calculator.livingto100.com/calculator. If you choose to do this, I would like a reflection of what are some of the ways this is calculated and what was predicted for you. There will be some questions about if your single or married, etc just mark single for those categories. Also answer what are ways that you can increase your expectancy number and what are ways that could harm your expectancy level. Remember this extra credit and will be worth an extra 50pts if you decide to do!

  2. Awesome activity. It really got me thinking about my life/health choices and how they may effect me later. I feel like it would have the same effect on other students. The qeustions are good at checking to see if they actually did their homework while also allowing for critical thinking.

I liked this article because it made me realize that you can live to be an old age but not be decrepid and useless. It also made me reconsider some of the life-style choices I make which is good because it would definitely do the same for students. Nice work, Abby.
